Shaving Tips to Avoid Dreaded ‘Razor Rash’

Lather and shave with the Kampuku Beauty Bar. The probiotic strains balance the skin’s pH and help prevent razor bumps and burn. Razor rash is a common occurrence that happens when less helpful strains take up residence in the microscopic nicks caused by shaving.

Proper lubrication also prevents razor burn. Shaving usually works best when the area is coated with a pH balancing soap, gel or lotion. Such products moisten the skin and soften the hair while also serving as a friction-reducing barrier between the skin and the razor.

Many people also begin by washing the area to be shaved in warm water. Skin that is either unwashed or splashed with cold water tends to constrict, which makes it more sensitive to irritation. Warmer temperatures, on the other hand, can promote relaxation, which leads to plasticity and reduced resistance.

Application Tip

Use Kampuku to suds up a cloth, apply soapy washcloth to face and use hands to massage soap onto face. Leave on face for several minutes to allow for greater penetration.

FAQs

1What does probiotic soap do?

Probiotic soaps include many benefits to human skin, a few to mention are:

  • Gently cleanses without stripping the skin of moisture. Unlike conventional surfactant-heavy bars, probiotic soap (e.g. Dr. Ohhira’s Kampuku Beauty Bar) uses mild, plant-derived cleansers plus probiotic extracts and their postbiotic metabolites (organic acids, short-chain fatty acids, amino acids and peptides).
  • Balances and protects the skin microbiome. The postbiotic acids help maintain an optimal pH (≈5.5–6.0), inhibit overgrowth of pathogens and support resident “good” bacteria.
  • Strengthens the barrier and hydrates. Fermentation-derived and amino-rich metabolites boost moisture retention, improve elasticity and accelerate repair of micro-damage (e.g. razor rash).
  • Soothes discomfort and redness. Natural inflammatory response support and bacteria inhibiting peptides work in concert to calm irritated or break-out prone skin, promoting a more even skin tone.
2Are beauty bars good for skin?

Dr. Ohhira offers a beauty bar formulated with botanicals and probiotics intended to gently cleanse, nourish, and support sensitive skin without artificial chemicals, fragrances, or dirt and oil combining harsh liquids. Such probiotic-based beauty bars can promote a healthy skin microbiome and are generally considered beneficial for maintaining optimal skin balance and hydration.

3What not to mix with probiotics skincare?

To preserve both live probiotic components and your native microbiome, steer clear of:

  • Harsh surfactants and detergents
    • Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES)
    • Ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate
  • Strong chemical exfoliants or actives
    • High-strength AHAs (glycolic, lactic >10%), BHAs (salicylic acid)
    • Benzoyl peroxide and sulfur at therapeutic concentrations
    • Professional peels or acid masks used immediately before/after
  • Alcohol-based or astringent formulations
    • Denatured alcohol (SD alcohol, ethanol), isopropyl alcohol
    • Witch hazel or menthol in high percentages
  • Synthetic preservatives and fragrances
    • Parabens (methyl-, propyl-), formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15)
    • Phthalate-laden “fragrance” blends and artificial dyes
  • Antimicrobial actives that are non-selective
    • Chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride, triclosan
  • Very high or very low pH products
    • Soaps/cleansers above pH 8 or strong alkalizers (lye-based)
    • Over-acidic serums (pH < 3) applied immediately around the same time

Mixing probiotic soap with any of the above can:

  • Neutralize or kill beneficial live cultures and postbiotic compounds
  • Disrupt your skin’s delicate pH and barrier lipids
  • Trigger irritation, dryness or rebound inflammation

For best results, use probiotic soap as your morning/evening cleanse, then follow with microbiome-friendly serums or moisturizers also free of the agents listed above.
