When the opportunity arose – through my association with Moms Meet – to try Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics, I was thrilled. We have long used probiotics in our household. When the boys were smaller and were prescribed antibiotics for ear infections, etc., we fed them yogurt with live cultures to replenish the good bacteria in their bellies. When R has any digestive issues – he gets constipated when he’s stressed – he takes probiotics. But we have always taken them in the form of yogurt or a liquid probiotic that needs to be refrigerated and has a fairly short shelf-life. I’d never tried them in pill format.
With all the research of gut health on more sustained diseases, including autoimmune diseases, more and more people in my circle of family, friends, and extended family are aiming to up their probiotic intake. I was excited to try these products. If you’re wondering about probiotics’ relevance on my kitchen blog, think about it this way. With my recipes, I aim for happy bellies. Probiotics help keep bellies happy and healthy.
What ARE Probiotics?
Probiotics are living bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, particularly good for your digestive system. Most people think of bacteria as harmful, as things that cause diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad, and they are naturally found in your body.
You can find probiotics in certain foods and supplements.
About Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics
Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics® is an all-natural probiotic that’s designed to support a healthy immune system while being easy to digest and absorb. In addition to the proprietary fermented culture, organic acid blend, and lactic acid bacteria blend, the product includes mountain spring water, safflower oil, and beeswax. The fermented culture is made from fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and seaweed that are fermented for three years and contain a dozen distinguishable probiotic strains.
About Dr. Ohhira’s other Products
In addition to the probiotics, I was able to try Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils, a vegan alternative to fish oil; Dr. Ohhira’s Propolis PLUS that includes green propolis and antioxidants as well; and Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic Kampuku Beauty Bar that is made with over a dozen plant extracts.
My Thoughts
Would I consider this a quality product? Absolutely.
Do I think it does what it claims to do? Certainly. We had some happy bellies!
Does this product work for my family? Not completely.
As I mentioned, we’ve long taken probiotics, but this is the first time we’re taking it in pill or capsule form. While my husband and I can take the capsules easily, our boys – who are 13 and 14 years old – struggled with them. The FAQs on the website indicate that we should just slice them open and pour the liquid in directly in their mouths or mix it into a food. So, with that in mind, I view the capsules and unnecessary packaging…for our family.
So, while I liked the product and definitely see it as a benefit for myself and my husband, it was not an all-around success for our household.
