Heartfelt Balance Handmade Life
Apr 25, 2017

I am a firm believer that what you eat has a huge effect on your body, your soul and your mind. Feed your body garbage and you’ll feel like garbage. Feed your body healthy, natural foods and you will feel amazing. At the beginning of this year, I did a clean eating challenge. Basically, it was getting rid of a lot of certain types of food that might cause issues in some people. I gave up dairy, alcohol, grains and sugar, among other things. By the end of my 30 days of eating clean, I had more energy, my skin was clearer, I was never itchy, I was positive. Life was amazing!

Then, when the clean eating challenge was over, I tried to re-introduce foods. When I ate pizza again for the first time, it did not go over so well. Since I had eaten wheat products with no problem, I thought maybe it was the cheese that was giving me an issue. I posted about it on Facebook and one of my friends who is a doctor and researcher told me that if I found the right probiotics I should be able to enjoy my favorite dairy product~~cheese.

Around the same time I began trying out Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics.

I received this product for free from Moms Meet, May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet blogger, I agree to use this product and post my honest opinion on my blog. The opinions posted are my own.

After a couple weeks of taking the probiotics I wasn’t having any issues with cheese any more.
I was able to eat cheese without the not so nice side effects I had that first time~~gas and bloating. Enter Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics ~~ Exit gas & bloating. (These are the results I had~~any results you have may be different. Everyone’s bodies are unique and react differently to different substances.)

I think that the probiotics definitely helped keep my body back on track as I started to re-introduce all of the different food groups that I had been abstaining from. Unfortunately, when I began eating all the foods again, I completely fell off the “eat clean” wagon. I was eating like crap in February. Even though I was eating some foods that were not so nice for my body~~cheese, ice cream, sugar and alcohol~~ my body stayed regular. There were no~~ummm, unfortunate tummy issues~~ all was still good. I really think that the probiotics were the reason that I was able to maintain regularity even though I wasn’t eating as clean as I should have been.

I took my probiotics exactly as directed until about a week ago. Since I haven’t been taking them, a funny thing has happened. My skin has started becoming dry and I’m getting that horrible cracked skin that can happen in Winter time. I don’t know if it’s related or not, but that’s enough for me to go back to my regular schedule of taking my Dr. Ohhira’s probiotics. Maybe when I’m not taking it, my body isn’t absorbing the nutrients that would help with my skin! Gut health is the starting point for the health of every part of your body, including skin. Might as well load up my body with beneficial bacteria.

Dr. Ohhira’s probiotics are made with mountain Spring water, fruits and vegetables and are fermented for three years with 12 distinctive strains of lactic acid bacteria.

They are encapsulated with their culture medium of fermented vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and seaweed. The blend includes prebiotics, probiotics and post-biotics. Prebiotics are what feed the probiotics~~that would be the fruits and vegetables. Post-biotics are the nutrients that occur through the natural fermentation process. All of this comes in the little capsules, and by taking them you help your body grow it’s own healthy bacteria. The healthy bacteria help digest food, help your body absorb nutrients, and boost the immune system. Imagine what a super-power the body could be if we always eat clean and support it with good probiotics!

When I was reading the box, I saw that it was vegetarian and that it was made with lactic acid. In my head, I was like, “Wait a minute! Isn’t lactic acid milk?” Can it be called vegetarian? Then I did a little research because I have an inquiring mind. I found this on Wikipedia. It makes it sound like lactic acid can also be the end product of decomposing plants~~which in Dr. Ohhira’s blend would be those fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and seaweed.

“These bacteria, usually found in decomposing plants and milk products, produce lactic acid as the major metabolic end product of carbohydrate fermentation.”

This info from their website is also good to know:
“Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics, Supplements and Skin Products are non-GMO and hypoallergenic (no dairy, no gluten); contains all-natural ingredients; and is guaranteed free of Soil-based Organisms (SBOs). Contains fermented soy. Soybeans used in long-term fermentation process are predigested and structurally modified to reduce or eliminate immuno-activity to soy. The probiotics are 100% vegetarian and stable without refrigeration.”

The probiotics are fairly easy to take. They’re small capsules which are easily swallowed. You have to take them on an empty stomach, twice a day. Remembering to take them in the morning was fairly easy for me. I just took a capsule while I was starting my day~~getting kids breakfasts and lunches ready. I don’t usually eat until I get those things done anyway. The second capsule of the day was harder for me because it was harder for me to get the timing correct. For best results it’s suggested to take it an hour before you eat and/or an hour and a half after you’ve eaten. That’s a two and a half hour swing in the middle of the day that I have to remember to 1. Not eat and 2. Take my probiotic in the middle. Note that the timing is just a suggestion to get the most benefit from the probiotic. I’m sure you could take it any time, it’s just better on an empty stomach.

Things to note when taking Dr. Ohhira’s probiotic:
It can cause minor bloating or a mild laxative OR constipating effect in the beginning. If that happens it’s a sign that the beneficial bacteria are “remodeling, detoxifying, and improving” the gut environment. This can also be said whenever you change your diet to a more healthy diet, too.

Pros and Cons of my experience with Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics:
Pros: Helped me feel better as I was reintroducing foods into my diet.
No side effects or aftertaste

Cons: Probiotics are supposed to be taken on an empty stomach. It’s hard to remember sometimes to time it correctly in the middle of the day (for me!).

Dr. Ohhira’s also has:
Propolis Plus
Essential Living Oils (Vegan alternative to Fish Oils)
Kampuku Beauty Bar
