Follow-up on The Discovery of Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 and the original “ME-3 Child”

On March 2, 1995 Professor Marika Mikelsaar isolated five strains of Lactobacillus fermentum from the intestinal tract of a healthy one-year old Estonian child. One of these strains, which was named Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3, was found to express extremely high antioxidant activity. Upon testing, ME-3 was found to synthesize glutathione.

Glutathione plays critical roles in the body as an antioxidant and a regulator of immune system activity and detoxification. Consequently, many of ME-3’s benefits parallel the primary benefits of glutathione.

Consequently, many healthcare professionals believe that the discovery of Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 with its ability to substantially boost glutathione levels is a revolutionary breakthrough in health and medicine.

Marika Mikelsaar, MD, PhD, who is professor emeritus in the department of microbiology at the University of Tartu in Estonia is the scientist who originally isolated and discovered Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3. In 2007, Professor Mikelsaar was honored with the European Union Woman Inventor and Innovator award.

In January 2017, Dr. Ross Pelton/Scientific Director for Essential Formulas decided to inquire about the current health of the individual who was the original donor now world-famous strain of probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3. We were told that this individual is now a young 16-year woman. She is an athlete who runs regularly and is in excellent health.
